Review by

Mary Manning has followed her father around the world, he's a diplomat and she understands how this is important. Her mother has died and this shadows them but overall they're happy. In London she has a chance to associate with other English people about her own age. When she gets a kiss from Sebastian Barrett she doesn't realise that this is part of a bet, a bet Sebastian regrets. However association with the people involved has helped him forget his woes, the war he has just fought. His family is in diplomatic circles too and when his older brother dies he's pressured into the fold.He regrets what happened between him and Mary, more because it humiliated her than anything else, he would have liked to make this a bigger relationship and now that Mary and he are fleeing Portugal with the Portuguese Royal court to Brazil he has an opportunity, if only he could get Mary to see how he has reformed. It was an entertaining read about a period of history I had never heard of before, I suspect I will be raiding the bibliography for further information. The romance wasn't bad, I didn't really feel that I got enough of her turn-around but overall it satisfied.
