Review by AdonisGuilfoyle
Shan's books are quick, easy reads for teens, but normally the characters offer enough depth and emotion to balance the action. Although I was moved by the events of this instalment, particularly Darren's guilt and sadness over the death of a friend and Mr Crepsley's overwhelming grief, the pace was just too fast to bring out the personalities of the characters. Shan the author seemed more interested in pontificating on the morality of war. And also, Darren's survival in the wild was ridiculous, even for a YA action-adventure series. I think I preferred him as Mr Crepsley's young assistant, not the precocious leader of men he is becoming. However, I am totally hooked, so I shall definitely read on!
