Review by

It's almost impossible to write a fitting review of Lord of the Rings. It is a classic work which has defined a whole genre of fantasy fiction. Very little if anything written since then has come close to Lord of the Rings in creating an imaginary world which is internally consistent. Part of Tolkien's success lies in the detail with which he worked out languages, etc, and created a huge history (since published by his son) on which Lord of the Rings was based. It's an epic tale of journey and quest which speaks to many human emotions. This 50th anniversary edition supposedly corrects many of the errors which have crept in to earlier versions. It includes the appendices, which give interesting background to the main work.
