A Stolen Life : A Memoir Paperback

4.5 out of 5 (3 ratings)

On 10 June 1991, eleven-year-old Jaycee Dugard was abducted from a school bus stop within sight of her home in Tahoe, California.

It was the last her family and friends saw of her for over eighteen years.

On 26 August 2009, Dugard, her daughters, and Phillip Craig Garrido appeared in the office of her kidnapper's parole officer in California.

Their unusual behaviour sparked an investigation that led to the positive identification of Jaycee Lee Dugard, living in a tent behind Garrido's home.

During her time in captivity, at the age of fourteen and seventeen, she gave birth to two daughters, both fathered by Garrido.

Dugard's memoir covers the period from the time of her abduction in 1991 up until the present.

In her stark, compelling narrative, Jaycee opens up about what she experienced, including how she feels now and the struggle to re-build her life after eighteen years in captivity.

Garrido and his wife Nancy have since pleaded guilty to their crimes.

The memoir of Jaycee Lee Dugard is unbelievable and inspiring. She was kidnapped when she was 11 on her way to the school bus. For 18 years she was trapped by her kidnapper and sexually abused. She was raped countless times having two children, and was forced too forget her identity as Jaycee. You will be amazed by her story, and shocked by how the justice system failed her many times to rescue her. Her story is sad but inspirational showing the bonds of love between her mother and her that never left during the 18 years of disappearance.

This book gives the first-hand account of a young girl's kidnapping and what happened afterwards. Jaycee Dugard was kidnapped before school in California when she was 11 years old. She describes in vivid detail the moment she was snatched and the 18 horrific years that followed. Dugard describes being raped repeatedly by her captor and being held in a shed in his back yard. She recounts the birth of her daughters and how they lived in a backyard for years. She also talks about the finally being rescued. This was a really powerful book that includes details that are shocking and disturbing. I thought the author's decision to talk about what happened to her was very brave. I hope, as she does, her horrific story will help other victims of sexual assault deal with their traumas.
