Would you like your children to read acknowledged classics of literature? The babylit series is a good start. In this Moby Dick primer, the bold pictures and simple text introduce central elements from the novel Moby Dick, in a toddler-friendly fashion. The overt message of the book is the ocean. Each new page introduces a new vocabulary word about the ocean, accompanied with cute illustrations colored in many shades of blue. While teaching young readers about the ocean, it sneaks in knowledge from the source material. For instance, the first two pages are about sailors, and the ones drawn in the illustration are prominent characters from the book, like Queequeg and Starbuck. On the whale page, the whale is white, of course. Several of the pages also use quotes from the original novel that are related to the illustrated vocabulary word. The book is fun on its own terms - especially if your children love fish, like mine do - but also plants some basic familiarity with a work of literature, that may one day translate into a desire to read the original Moby Dick.
