This is the English translation of a Norwegian book set in Sydney in the 1990’s. It’s a crime book which I enjoy, but there were several frustrating aspects to the story and it’s hard to tell if this is as a result of the translation or the writing style itself. It’s full of people telling stories that are not necessarily related to current events. It also contains stories of the Aboriginal dreamtime, which are supposed to be parables for the current events. It didn’t quiet gel with me. At the same time the writing style made you wonder who was saying what and I had to go back and re-read several passages to clarify things. Plus there is the obsession with the fan in the office. Not great, but not all that bad.

I remain bemused by the immense popularity that Scandinavian crime novels have experienced around the world recently recently. I would have to concede that this is better than the others that I have tried - after all, I managed to persevere through to the end of this, which is more than i have achieved in any of my previous forays into the genre. I am not champing at the bit to try any more in the series, though. What happened to the idea of empathetic characters and plausible plots? Or am I just revealing myself as a sad traditionalist!
