Dead Cold Paperback
by Louise Penny
Part of the Chief Inspector Gamache series
Winter in Three Pines, and the sleepy village is carpeted in snow.
It's a time of peace and goodwill - until a scream pierces the biting air.
A spectator at the annual Boxing Day curling match has been fatally electrocuted.
Despite the large crowd, there are no witnesses and - apparently - no clues.
Chief Inspector Armand Gamache discovers a history of secrets and enemies in the dead woman's past.
But he has enemies of his own, and as he is frozen out of decision-making in the Surete du Quebec, he has to decide who he can trust...

Review by Cecilturtle
Penny's novels aren't great for the mystery (I discovered the murderer half-way through), but they are great for the sensitivity and incredible character development. No one is who he or she seems : they all have a compelling complexity that makes them attractive and loveable - even when they're brash or egotistical. The literary allusions and poetry infused through the story makes this series a book lover's delight. The bizarre murder and network of friendships and relationships are what make this novel a page turner. I read it in a few hours engulfed by the quirks of personalities and impatient to see the patchwork revealed. These stories just get better and better; the implied cliff hanger, just makes the reader want to reach out for the next!
