A Different Sky Paperback
by Meira Chand
Singapore - a trading post where different lives jostle and mix.
It is 1927, and three young people are starting to question whether this in between island can ever truly be their home.
Mei Lan comes from a famous Chinese dynasty but yearns to free herself from its stifling traditions; ten-year-old Howard seethes at the indignities heaped on his fellow Eurasians by the colonial British; Raj, fresh off the boat from India, wants only to work hard and become a successful businessman.
As the years pass, and the Second World War sweeps through the east, with the Japanese occupying Singapore, the three are thrown together in unexpected ways, and tested to breaking point.
Richly evocative, "A Different Sky" paints a scintillating panorama of thirty tumultuous years in Singapore's history through the passions and struggles of characters the reader will find it hard to forget.

the first two thirds of the book kept me going and turning the pages. the three different main characters met on occasion but with out having a crazy story behind them. interesting too see how different each character adapted to the different politcal situation. however, when the story moved to after the war i lost interest and i was just glancing over the pages.

I bought this book ini Singapore when I was there a few weeks ago. I look for local authors when I travel and I look to read fiction that takes place where I have been. In this case Sinapore. It start around 1927 in Singapore and you get a good feel for the lives of the locals, the English and the Chinese. The resulting tensions, differences., points of view. There is a story hidden with the back story of 'Singapore. Singapore is principally English and Chinesehow they interact is part of the storyl I like the ''fffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffff IN 1927 AND LATER PEOPLE OF THE eNGLSIH BOUROISIE AND THE cHINESE OCCUPY. The story THAT takes place in Singapore'.. So a place is always busy for. he English and the Chineser dominate the community. The story runs from 1927 through 1956, a periuod when much have happned in Singapore. This books is definitely worth a detour if you are inito colorfol Southeast Asia. I was. I buy books on area when i travel and when i find the books because you often can't find them when you go home. This is part a series so i will buy more when i finish this novel it is a litte melodramatic but i like that. you may too.
