Zoe is having a bad day. Her job in a department store looks less and less likely to lead to a fashion buyer’s post, and she can’t stop moping over her ex-boyfriend David. A grateful customer tells her a story about making a wish, and Zoe gives it a go: “I wish I could have David back”.Next morning, she wakes up in David’s room, and finds that she has travelled back 6 months in time. She has a second chance to try again with David and to seek promotion at work. And at first, things seem to go very well.Time travel aside, the plot of this novel is quite predictable, but I got very anxious to see how it would all work out. The best bit of the story is the characterisation, and some brilliantly comic scenes, such as an encounter with David’s appallingly snobbish parents and the ex-girlfriend they love and who never seems to go away. As I read the book I frequently cringed for Zoe at the same time as laughing, as she learns that however much she changes her behaviour, she can’t change anyone else’s personality and attitudes. This is chick lit at its best.
