Schlachtflieger! : Germany and the Origins of Air/ground Support, 1916-1918 Hardback

2.5 out of 5 (1 rating)

This book presents, in words and pictures, the history of the Schutzstaffeln from their formation as escort aircraft, to their being renamed Schlachstaffeln and their role as infantry support aircraft.

Participating in all the major German offences on the Western Front in 1918, and manned mainly by enlisted pilots and gunners, these units became the first true close air support squadrons.

While this is an impressive compilation of illustrations and factual material relating to the so-called "battle" squadrons of Germany's World War I air arm, it's also very weak in terms of narrative and analytic content. There's not even an epilog tying the experience of the Great War to that of World War II.
