Word Freak : A Journey Into the Eccentric World of the Most Obsessive Board Game Ever Invented Paperback

3.5 out of 5 (2 ratings)

For many, Scrabble is merely a board game. For others it is an intellectual pilgrimage. In this book, Stefan Fatsis, journalist and self-confessed word freak, goes in search of the people for whom Scrabble is life and affords us a glimpse into the extraordinary world of the brilliant geeks and misfit savants who populate the highest ranks of the game.

Playing competitively in tournaments across the world, Fatsis chronicles the story of how Scrabble has grown from a diversion invented by an unemployed architect during The Great Depression into the hugely successful, challenging and beloved game of today.

More than you ever wanted to know about Scrabble. it was fascinating in that way first-hand accounts of obsessions become. It also demonstrated why I will never become a tournament Scrabble player. Man, is that hard work! I enjoyed it for the view into a totally foreign geekdom. It also provided an extensive background to the history of Scrabble, the ownership, it's international following that were fascinating.

Excellent recounting of the world of Scrabble experts, those who go from tourney to tourney. The author, while writing, becomes one of those, rising to the upper echelons. The book is solidly packed with details of words used, how they are used, etc. For that reason I could only read this in small bits. But it is very interesting for us Scrabble-philes.
