Bleach : v. 1 Paperback
by Tite Kubo
Illustrated by Tite Kubo
Part of the Bleach series
Ichigo Kurosaki has always been able to see ghosts, but this ability doesn't change his life nearly as much as his close encounter with Rukia Kuchiki, a Soul Reaper and member of the mysterious Soul Society.
While fighting a Hollow, an evil spirit that preys on humans who display psychic energy, Rukia attempts to lend Ichigo some of her powers so that he can save his family; but much to her surprise, Ichigo absorbs every last drop of her energy.
Now a fully-fledged Soul Reaper himself, Ichigo quickly learns that the world he inhabits is one full of dangerous spirits, and along with Rukia, who is slowly regaining her powers, it's Ichigo's job to both protect the innocent from Hollows and to help the spirits themselves find peace.

Ichigo Kurosaki can see dead people. He doesn't know why, and he doesn't talk about it. One night he is saved from a soul-eating spirit by Rukia Kuchiki, a member of the Soul Society. Rukia has to give her powers to Ichigo after she is wounded. Now Ichigo has the ability to find wounded souls and send them on to the proper afterlife.Nothing is as simple as it seems. Ichigo's newly acquired power also comes with responsibilities. Now Ichigo has to take on any tasks from the Soul Society that were intended for Rukia. He also still has to study at school and deal with his 'interesting' family.Just as you get comfortable with the confines of Ichigo's world and what can and can't happen, Tite Kubo changes things in the next volume of the Manga. An excellently conceived world with compelling characters facing real dilemmas.John KlimaFranklin Township Public Library

A ghost-sighting boy named Ichigo Kurosaki discovers the existence of Shinigami, or rather Soul Reapers, through pure accident; when a soul-eating, rogue spirit comes to devour him, he meets Rukia Kuchiki, the black-haired death god who apparently has no drawing talent. She finds a spot of trouble when the hollow slices into her, so she transfers her power to Ichigo, who promptly takes care of the monster. However, when the dilemma is solved, they find that he can't give her powers back! She takes on the guise of his classmate, while Ichigo has a new hobby: taking care of the destructive hollows.

Bleach has become very popular so it may become easy to over look it as over hyped, but it really is a fantastic Manga. The characters are extremely well developed and nuanced for a "boy" or "action" manga, that being said the action is still great. Ichigo (strawberry) has to be one of my all time favorite characters as is Chad a big guy who like all things cute. Bleach is worth the investment such a long series entails.

Teen with psychic powers become obliged to protect the vulnerable and help the evil dead to find peace. Entertaining characterisation and energetic art although some imagery is hard to read.
