Andrzej Monk directs this 1950s Polish film which explores less conventional means of heroism.

Set during World War II, the feature is comprised of two separate tales.

The first, entitled 'Scherzo Alla Pollacca', follows Dzidzius (Edward Dziewonski), a Warsaw man who is drawn into the war in spite of his fervent desire to protect himself from danger at all costs. 'Ostinato Lugubre' takes place in a Prisoner of War camp, where the escape bid of Lt.

Zawistowski (Tadeusz Lomnicki) becomes a subject of legend among the patriotic Polish POWs.
