Burningham, Sarah O'LearyBoyology: A Teen Girl's Crash Course in All Things BoyIllustrated by Keri Smith. 2009. 168pp. $12.99 pbk. Chronicle Books LLC. 978-0-8118-6436-7. Grades 7-12.This how-to book is a guide to relationships for teenage girls, dealing with such wide-ranging topics as how to introduce a boyfriend to your parents, how to decide who pays on a date, how to make sure your boundaries are respected, how to flirt, and how to get over a breakup. There is a strong and encouraging emphasis on girls being able to stand up for themselves and on teen girls' relationships being healthy; Burningham says repeatedly that if a boy does not respect your boundaries or like you for who you are, it is better not to be in a relationship than to be with a boy like that. The book contains colorful pages with cartoon drawings and sidebars in which real teens, boy and girl, speak about relationship experiences they have had (the blue boxes hold quotes from boys while the pink boxes hold quotes from girls). The author's husband also appears in blue boxes to talk about what his high school experience was like. Recommended for teens or preteens; those with relationship experience will be able to identify with the stories told by other real teens, and those without will find this a lighthearted, useful primer.
