Description

'I can imagine you at forty,' she said, a hint of malice in her voice. 'I can picture it right now.' He smiled without opening his eyes. 'Go on then.' 15th July 1988. Emma and Dexter meet for the first time on the night of their graduation. Tomorrow they must go their separate ways. So where will they be on this one day next year? And the year after that? And every year that follows? Twenty years, two people, ONE DAY. From the author of the massive bestseller STARTER FOR TEN.

  • Absolutely one of the most emotionally affecting novels I've read in quite some time. Being a guy, I don't generally go for romantically-driven books. This one is primarily a book about a freindship, but not since The Time-Traveler's Wife have I been so moved by two characters' chemistry on the page. I recommend this whole-heartedly.

  • The novel follows a couple on St Swithins Day over 20 years of an on/off relationship, and beyond. I did get to feel that I knew the characters, and I cared what happened to them. The major tragedy reminded me of Rachel on Cold Feet.

  • A beautiful book - at times absolutely hilarious, yet often heart-rendingly sad. The story revolves around two characters (uber-reveller Dexter Mayhew and the sensitive, thoughtful, politically-correct Emma Morley) who spend the night together following their graduation ceremonies in Edinburgh in 1988. The book then traces their separate lives by looking at the same day (15 July - entirely coincidentally the day on which I finished reading it!) through the succeeding years. One of the most enjoyable and moving books that I have read for a long time.

  • Emma Morley and Dexter Mayhew hook up on graduation day from college -- St. Swithin's Day -- in 1988 and the author of the novel checks in with them every year on the same day until 2007. I loved the combination of humor, recent history, pop culture, examination of class, and study of relationships that this book provides. Nicholls does a beautiful job of making the main characters real for the reader, and even those that are on the periphery have an unexpected depth.
