In 1786 a fisherman's daughter from Cornwall called Mary Broad was sentenced to be hung for theft. But her sentence was commuted, and she was transported to Australia, one of the first convicts to arrive there. How Mary escaped the harsh existence of the colony and found true love, and how she was captured and taken back to London in chains, only to be released after a trial where she was defended by no less than James Boswell, is one of the most gripping and moving stories of human endeavour (based on an amazing true story) you will ever read.

  • Found this book fascinating. Based on a true story, (I believe), it made me cry and at the end I wanted to read further to find out more about the lead character who supposedly was a real person.

  • Based on the true story of the remarkable escape of a female convict from the Sydney Cove settlement in the first years of the colony. The trials this woman faced and survived are incredible. The most moving parts for me were the desciptions of life in the British gaols, the hulk ships and the conditions on board the First Fleet and their early days in Sydney. If only they could see Sydney now......

  • Great story set in London and Australia about a young convict woman who arrives on the First Fleet. Extraordinary character and adventures with a plot that takes many unexpected turns. I thought it was far too exciting and amazing, but apparently it's a true stroy.
