Description

Written by a team of eminent specialists, it is filled with everything prospective parents need to know about creating the optimum environment for a developing baby and safeguarding the health and wellbeing of the mother. The book contains special fold-out sections on each of the trimesters and the birth process, week-by-week images of the developing baby, sympathetically illustrated chapters dealing with all aspects of pre-natal care, labour preparation, delivery experiences and care of the newborn, as well as comprehensive reference sections on medical treatments and procedures in both pregnancy and the post-natal period.

  • I originally borrowed this book from a friend in September 2006 during my first pregnancy and bought it for myself when my second pregnancy was confirmed in August 2007 and after a very thorough search of the pregnancy sections in several bookshops and libraries. It gives a lot of good advice and the section showing the development of the baby week by week is incredible. It has helped set my mind at rest about a lot of the ailments and afflictions that affect you during pregnancy. I have read through it several times now and dipped into it at least twice a week for advice as well as to read through the sections on what was going on with the baby and what to expect for myself each week. Two things would have improved this book, a list of baby names could have been included and a better section on the loss of a baby would be appreciated. We lost our first baby in January 2007 with what is called a missed miscarriage at four and a half months. The section in this book does not cover such a late missed miscarriage at all so did nothing to help us through a terrible time in our lives. I know that nobody thinks it will happen to them and nobody wants to read about things like this until they have to but its a fact of pregnancy that happens a lot and when it happened to me I wanted answers, or at least the chance to read about it properly. Other than that this book is a good one and has been the best book I have found regarding healthy normal pregnancy. I would definately recommend it and it has only made 4 1/2 stars for the lack of information on miscarriage, otherwise it would have been 5 stars without question.ETA - since writing this review I was involved in a car accident and our second child was born prematurely as a result. She died shortly after her birth. Again, more advice on the loss of a child would have been appreciated.

  • A good read, much fun over some of it, and recommended by Aminda de Silva, allegedly my BEST man, actually found a lot of useful, and found myself quoting it at work, to new young mums, so can't be all bad...
