Fernando Mireilles ('City of God') directs this gritty TV series set in Dona Marta, one of Rio de Janeiro's many sprawling 'favelas' (slums). Featuring a cast of local actors and filmed in a rudimentary style using a Super 16 camera, the series follows the street lives of two teenage boys, Laranjinha (Darlan Cunha) and Acerola (Douglas Silva). The series broke Brazilian television protocol by showing the reality of favela life, rather than the usual fare of air-brushed soap operas.
