Welcome to Kirkdale Bookshop
Kirkdale Bookshop is probably the oldest independent bookshop in south east London, opening in 1966. It has gradually expanded to two floors over the years, so that now it has an extensive range of new and second-hand books, an inviting children's section, cards and gifts, and an art gallery. And now we are pleased to offer our renowned customer service online!

Open Book Group
23 Nov 2011 19:30
We thought our first meeting was a great success. Opinions were divided on some aspects of Freedom by Jonathan Franzen, for example, just who did deserve a happy ending? But it was certainly worth reading and discussing. Our next meeting will be on Wednesday 23rd November 2011 when we will be discussing JAMRACH'S MENAGERIE by Carol Birch (Paperback £7.99). This book is shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize- the results will be announced on October 18th- so we could be reading the winner! It was also longlisted for the Orange Prize. ''An imaginative tour-de-force encompassing the sights and smells of 19th century London and the wild sea...gripping, superbly written and a delight'' The Times.
This new book group in the shop is a free event (unless you want a glass of wine for 50p). You don't have to book, just turn up.

Halloween
31 Oct 2011 09:30
Halloween has come round again! On Monday 31st October a procession of children in fantastic costumes will no doubt be seen up and down the High Street, popping into local shops for their 'trick or treat'. Some people don't like the idea of Halloween, but this is an extremely safe and entertaining way of satisfying the children's appetite.

In Shackleton's Footsteps. A talk by the author, Henry Worsley.
10 Oct 2011 19:30
Henry Worsley is coming to Kirkdale Bookshop on Monday 10th October to talk about his fascinating expedition to the South Pole and to sign copies of his book. Henry is descended from Frank Worsley, the Skipper on Shackleton's ship Endurance, and so is perfectly placed to retrace the route that was taken exactly one hundred years ago. Shackleton himself was a resident of Sydenham and so this book is of particular poignancy. Henry's writing has been described as 'honest, gripping and intensely personal'; his talk is not to be missed!
Booking essential. Tickets available from the shop at £4.
