Born in Sunderland in 1946, Terry Deary's early life was spent in his father’s butcher’s shop, which was better than school where he was bullied by his loathsome teachers. His career in the arts began in 1972 at Theatre Powys in Mid-Wales, and he has worked as actor, theatre-director, drama teacher and television presenter.
He is the author of over 270 books, including over 60 titles in the world’s bestselling children’s history series, Horrible Histories. Now in its sixth season, the Horrible Histories TV show has won BAFTAs and a British Comedy Award.
A dedicated runner with Derwentside Athletic Club, Terry ran the Great North Run for the 18th time in 2014 for Grace House Children’s Hospice and he is patron to Single Homeless Action Initiative in Durham (SHAID).
