Rising Writers

October 2023

Charlie Moyler

Charlie Moyler is an Art Director from south east London and has been designing children’s books for over a decade. As the child of two artists, she spent a lot of time creating things when she was younger – and even dabbled in selling her own drawings at her parents’ exhibitions. Thankfully she has found her way into a job that surrounds her with talented artists every day and she has little desire to compete with them now. The Tree Next Door is Charlie’s debut authored picture book.

Dann McDorman

Dann McDorman is an Emmy-nominated TV news producer, who has also worked as a newspaper reporter, book reviewer, and cabinet maker. He grew up as an army brat, born on a U.S. military base in what was then called West Germany; his family moved every two to three years after that. Dann’s first piece of fiction was a grade-school story about a pirate; his second was a middle-school sequel to the classic “The Lady or the Tiger?” He spent half of his adult life failing to be a writer; he spent the next half trying to forget about it. West Heart Kill, then, feels like a miracle. Dann lives in Brooklyn, New York with his amazing wife and two (mostly amazing) children.

Hwang Bo-reum

Hwang Bo-reum studied computer engineering and worked as a software engineer before quitting at the age of thirty. She promised herself ten years to find something she loves to do, and to spend the rest of her life on it if she does. In her early thirties, she started writing, spending hours on end in her room to hone her craft. Her first essay collection I Read Every Day was published, followed by two other collections: I Tried Kickboxing for the First Time and This Distance is Perfect. She submitted her novel, which she'd written and left aside a few years ago, to an open call for ebook publication, and was subsequently released on the platform as Welcome to the Hyunam-dong Bookshop. Readers loved the book, and because of their requests, the paperback edition was released. It received overwhelming support from Korean readers, earning it a spot in the TOP 10 Bestsellers of 2022, and to date, foreign edition rights have been sold to over 20 countries and regions.

Mariely Lares

Mariely Lares is a Mexican-American writer of fiction. Born in the only hospital of a small town in Southern California - which, fun fact, is also Cher’s birthplace - she grew up straddling two worlds, crossing the border almost every day. She has a degree in Computer Science Engineering and lives in San Diego, where she can be found doing all the outdoorsy things, rescuing dogs, and writing her next book.
