Review by

When a thoroughly unlikable woman is stabbed and killed in the village of Barrington, Ivy Beasley decides her murder needs to be investigated and that the police can't be trusted to handle the job. The elderly spinster recently arrived at a senior residence, Springfields, run by a schoolmarmish woman who believes old people should be quiet and fade away gracefully. Ivy is having none of it. Ms. Beasley decides to form a detective agency (Enquire Within -- which has no client) and brings into the fold her wealthy, widowed cousin Deirdre and a new and mysterious younger man who just moved into a cottage along Hangman's Row. It was Gus's neighbor who was murdered. The snoopy trio prowls the streets and alleys (alright, there are no alleys) of Barrington, asking questions -- even at the manor house -- where the local lord is being held captive by his headstrong housekeeper. It isn't until a fellow Springfields resident -- a man who's smitten with our Miss Ivy -- joins the team that things start to roll. The sympathetic, young Polish girl who works at Springfields also adds to the fun.The Hangman's Row Inquiry is a textbook example of a British cozy ... and Ann Purser is a polished writer who knows how to create great characters and tell a cracking good story. Cozy fans will love it.Review based on publisher-provided copy.2/23/2010
