This is such a sweet story of a bear who believes he wants to be alone until he finally gets his wish and then finds he prefers some company and a mouse who spends most of the book ignoring the bear’s boundaries until he finally acknowledges them only to find them changed. I love how this book describes the two animals interactions when they finally do have a snack, and I love the illustrations which create such detailed and specific images of Bear’s house that, as you turn from one page to another, it can feel as though you are walking through his rooms.

A Visitor for Bear is my favorite picture book of 2008. The illustrations are homey and comforting and demand repeated readings. They also supply a huge amount of the characterization to a stubborn but kind hearted bear and his persistent new friend. A classic in the making.
