Review by

I really enjoyed this book. The premise of a family of Lumans (different levels of reapers - Lumans being those at the top who guide souls who have suffered accidental or unexpected deaths towards the light, reassuring them and helping them to accept their death) was interesting. I liked that the Lumans had their own history, hierarchy and rules, and that breaking the rules carried severe punishment. The struggles of a young teenage boy in a Luman family who just wants to live a normal life feels real and leaves the reader with a good sense of how hard it would be to feel like the black sheep in such a restrictive environment. On one hand feeling a sense of duty, honour and history with regards to the amazing heritage he was born into, but feeling trapped and angry that he seems to have no free will to choose some other life for himself. Adam's struggle to do what feels right to him, even if it's considered wrong by those around him made him a sympathetic character. I liked that the author also exposed the depths of other family members and helped Adam see that people and circumstances surrounding them can create impossible choices that are not always easy or simple, but all have consequences.
