As a 101 book on the topic of food production and the history of some foods it's excellent, it doesn't add a huge amount to what I know, but made me want to read more about certain topics.Topics included are things like how vegetarian beer is; how large prawns are made; how formed ham is made; what chewing gum is and if it's safe to swallow; what chili burning does to you; how coffee is decafinated and what is the safe dose anyway; what is processed cheese (with a how to make your own recipe included); does gin make you sad; what's in a doner kebab; difference between green and black olives; sea salt vs table salt; what is used as red colouring; what is scampi; how much cow is in beef stock; do free-range eggs taste better; why can't you buy cashew nuts in the shell; is it okay to eat mouldy food; what do champagne bubbles do to you; a discussion of probiotic yogurts (alas stating that probiotics are killed by freezing, there goes the justification for frozen yogurt for me, except liking the taste); why vitamins are added to cornflakes; how fresh is pure squeezed orange juice; if a glass of red wine daily is healthy; how much strawberries are in strawberry flavouring with a bonus recipe to make your own); if it's safe to reheat rice; how much cream is in Ice Cream; how to smoke food; if detox diets work; if artificial sweeteners are safer than sugar and if lite food is a good diet aid.It's interesting but nothing stellar revealed here, one more for people new to the idea that not everything is obvious from labels.
