The first feature film directed by legendary US auteur Stanley Kubrick.
Set during a war between two forces at an indeterminate point in time, the film follows a group of soldiers who are shot down behind enemy lines.
The four men, Sergeant Mac (Frank Silvera), Lieutenant Corby (Kenneth Harp), Private Sidney (Paul Mazursky) and Private Fletcher (Stephen Coit), hatch an escape plan.
They intend to sail down the river back to their own lines in darkness, but the stress of their situation and a series of unexpected interlopers threaten to sink them before they even take to the water.
The movie was a commercial flop and in later years Kubrick took steps to prevent it reaching the public, though it garnered critical praise at the time of release and from subsequent film scholars.
