Read from November 05 to 13, 2013Listened for Review (Simon & Schuster)Overall Rating: 3.50Story Rating: 3.00Character Rating: 4.00Audio Rating: 4.00 (not part of the overall rating)First Thought when Finished: Black and Blue had some really great moments but the timeline at times was a little confusing.Story Thoughts: Have you ever wanted to love a story/series but you just can't quite get there? I think that is me with the Otherworld Assassin series. I have read both books in the series so far. There are parts that pull me in, then bam something happens and I am back out of the story again. I can't quite pinpoint what is keeping me from being fully vested. I am leaning towards the overlapping timelines. I have to wonder if the next one will tie them all together. I am going to stick with it and see how the third one turns out.Character Thoughts: I liked both Corbin and Evangeline! I thought they had some great interactions and the story was strongest when focused on them as a couple. Eva was especially a spit-fire with great comeback timing, lots of spunk, and a go-getter attitude. Corbin (Blue) had some great nicknames for her that made me grin and I am sure made her want to punch him. I knew they belonged together immediately but loved that it took time to play out over the story! The characters are what keep me invested in the Otherworld Assassin series but they are enough! Truly just all around fantastic cast of characters.Audio Thoughts: Narrated by George Newbern / Length 9 hrs and 11 minsGeorge did a fantastic job with the narration. His accents for Evangeline were even well done and I think spot-on for the character. The pacing, timing, and delivery were perfect for the pace of the story. I would listen to George again!Final Thoughts: I am really hoping that the third book really brings it together for me. Sometimes it just takes that one book to make the others be complete!

Corbin Blue is the star quarterback for the Strikers, a team in the National Otherworld Football League. He has as a secret. He is a lethal black ops agent. The stunning playboy uses his looks and talent as his cover. Evangaline (Evie) Black is the daughter of Michael Black; owner of the Strikers and head of the black ops team. Evie gave up being a black ops agent when a tragedy stuck, and her sister died. She gets her degree and becomes a doctor, leaving the agency behind.Corbin and Evie have hated each other for years, but now they are forced into a mission together where they can trust no one else; as they get to really know one another their feeling for each other begins to change.Black and Blue is an exciting action packed story. This thrilling supernatural spy novel will have your attention from start to finish.I love the mental side comments that Corbin and Evie make when talking to each other. It is definitely humorous and will keep you laughing. I also love Evie’s James Bond-like weapons and her purse arsenal. To say creative is an understatement.Every time I pick up a Gena Showalter book I’m reminded of what a talented writer she is. I have always enjoyed her work and Black and Blue does not disappoint. ARC provided in exchange for an honest review.

Our Review, by LITERAL ADDICTION's Pack Alpha - Chelle:*AudiobookGena is back with Black and Blue and the OTHERWORLD ASSASSINS! This book had all of the wit, heat, action, heart and drama I've come to know, love and crave from Gena Showalter, and then some. I will even go so far as to say that Black and Blue became my 3rd favorite Showalter book of all time. :)I loved the ALIEN HUNTRESS series, and after Last Kiss Goodnight, wasn't totally sure what my thoughts were on OTHERWORLD ASSASSIN. Black and Blue sucked me in to this new spin-off world and left me wanting more and more. There was some overlap of timeframe between Last Kiss Goodnight and Black and Blue. Last Kiss was told from Solo's point of view, and Black and Blue is from Blue's. Gena's writing in this book was phenomenal. You could tell that she became a part of her characters. They literally leapt off of the page and I was laughing out loud on so many occasions I finally had to stop listening in public. :)The exceptionally witty dialogue, one-liners, and absurd nicknames from Corbin and Evie were stellar. And even with the light-heartedness, the drama, danger, and action was well thought out and integral to the storyline. Evie puts Blue in his place, shakes him to the core, they literally save the day, and fall in love besides. I also loved the overlap of stories, and can only assume that the next book of the series will be for John No Last Name, the mysterious golden boy....George did a wonderful job with the narration, and I will definitely be looking forward to listening to more from him. He has the perfect cadence and wry tone that these books need.An easy 5 skulls and highly recommended for all paranormal romance readers. All Gena Showalter fans will adore this book...

Best-selling author Gena Showalter is known for her paranormal romances, and on one level I’m saddened that it has taken me this long to read her work. The Otherworld Assassin series is my first foray into one of Showalter’s creative worlds where paranormal beings coexist with humans, albeit not always peacefully. It looks like this series is a spinoff from her Alien Huntress series, but from my experience, it wasn’t necessary to have read any of the books from that series before starting this one. However, I do recommend reading the first book in the series, Last Kiss Goodnight which establishes the overall plot and vividly describes the mystery and danger that continues to unravel in Black and Blue. I borrowed the first book in this new series, Last Kiss Goodnight, from my local library, and reading it really helped me understand the dynamics behind this fictitious world where alien beings, known as Otherworlders arrived on Earth over 100 years ago, leading to worldwide war between the various paranormal species and humans. Now, many Otherworlders have made Earth their new home and are, for the most part, accepted by the human race. Last Kiss Goodnight also introduces the heroes of the series, an elite group of Otherworlder black op agents who are essentially assassins for the new world government. Showalter does a lot of the world building in this first book and gives enough captivating details about the main characters’ personalities and backstories to pique my interest in following the series. Last Kiss Goodnight easily pulled me into this creative and sometimes dark and violent world full of fascinating, richly-developed characters.Black and Blue is a great follow-up to Last Kiss Goodnight, and I actually liked this book more because of the dynamite relationship between Evie Black and Corbin Blue. They are so well-matched for each other despite the animosity that has existed between them for several years. The sexual tension between these two makes this a sizzling page-turner right from the beginning, and steamy sensuality exudes from practically every page. I will admit that at times it was almost a little too much for me but the witty, spirited, and sometimes outright hilarious banter between Evie and Corbin was absolutely irresistible. The opening of the book backtracks and recreates the explosive scene that is the foundation for the storyline, except this time it is narrated based on Blue’s experience. This book moves the story along much further than I anticipated, and the mastermind and motivation behind the bombing is finally fully revealed. You can expect some intense and suspenseful scenes where both Evie and Blue find themselves in life-threatening situations, and it’s thrilling to follow the dramatic changes and emotional growth these two undergo by the end. I received a copy of Black and Blue from the author for an honest review.
