Catalogue of the 'Germanic' Antiquities from the Klemm Collection in the British Museum Hardback
Gustav Friedrich Klemm (1802-67) was an avid scholar and collector of antiquities, based for most of his life in Dresden.
In 1868 A.W. Franks acquired a major part of his collection for The British Museum.
Most of this collection has never before been adequately published and remains to all intents and purposes unknown: this catalogue and its illustrations therefore provide an immensely valuable resource.
The catalogue presents material chiefly from the territory of the old German Confederation, in particular from the area which falls within the modern state of Poland.
It ranges from the Neolithic to the post-mediaeval period, and includes some already famous items such as the important Bronze Age hoards from Biecz and Neunheilingen.
In addition to the catalogue proper, the cultural and historical context of the collection is explored, together with a wealth of archival and biographical information; there is new scientific analysis of a number of items, and commentaries on provenance and chronology are provided.
Detailed indexes and a glossary make the work easy to use.
