One of Egans more imaginative. Galactic travelling avatars who have done everything have an opportunity to cross the galactic core controlled by the Aloof. They discover a DNA-based race of entities living in a fragmentary habitat in the accretion disk around a neutron star. Fascinating extrapolation of a plausible ecology and physics where gravity is anything but Newtonian.
