The single best, most comprehensive, most authoritative dictionary of the English language on the planet. If you can afford this in any format -- full, compact, or CD -- you should buy it. It's obviously skewed toward British English as it's published by Oxford University, but it encompasses other forms of English as well, and has the most complete etymological and usage notes anywhere.

I bought the one-volume (not the two-volume) editon, soon after it became available. For years, it was my most prized book. Not just meanings, but the wonderful history of the language, and of the people who used it, is here. Once I could make out headwords and some body text with the naked eye. Alas, even with my reading glasses and the magnifier, it's now quite difficult to browse, so I have to deduct half-a-star for that. I think I need to buy a more-volume set. :-)

Frankly I had difficulty with reading with the magnifier provided. I plan to buy a stronger one.
