Eleanor and Gabriel  meet in unusual circumstances after Eleanor’s just seen her fiancée in a compromising situation. Being impulsive she reacts by taking on a bet which is how she comes to met Gabriel; there’s an instant and powerful attraction between them. He propotions her thinking she’s a “woman of easy virtue”. She agrees to go with him but realises that although she’s unconventional, this is a step too far. She runs out on him leaving him frustrated in more ways than one. They never imagine they will meet again but when they do, they know they’re meant to be together. Gabriel is intrigued by her unconventionality whilst Eleanor’s attracted to him because of his good looks and loyalty; he assures her he won't tell her father about her indiscretions. When Gabriel returns home he ends his relationship with his fiancé; the relationship had run its course. He loves Eleanor but thinks he can’t have her as she’s already engaged. Eleanor finds out her intended has been cheating so ends the engagement. Now that they’re both free but other obstacles rear there head: Gabriel has a mistress (Libby Lawson) and Eleanor finds out; she’s too proud to put up with his falandering. Gabriel has also stood trial for manslaughter; he accidentally killed a French sea captain who had a preference for young boys, when he tried to rescue his stable hand. After finding out about Gabriel’s past a heart broken Eleanor goes to Amsterdam to think about her future. Gabriel, acquitted of manslaughter, follows her to convince her to marry him. Eventually he convinces her ;she forgives him his past as he’s ended the affair with his mistress. They are set to marry but on the way home Eleanor’s ship is wrecked. She survives and they marry. Part two of the drama sees them begin their married life but Gabriel’s past casts long shadows.A letter arrives telling him his ex mistress has had a son by him. He doesn’t tell Eleanor but she finds the letter and is furious. He meets his son once beforeLibby decides to emigrate taking his son with her. Eleanor is left hoping that their marriage can survive when he’s a father but she’s not a mother. The next book in the series continues their emotional and challenging adventure. Can true love conquer all?
