Europe and the Global Shift of Powers : How Can the EU Survive in a Disordered World? Hardback

Edited by Janis BerzinS, Sven Bernhard Gareis

Part of the International and Security Studies series

Millions of refugees spilling into the Union from the war-torn and despaired regions in the European periphery have not only overcharged the traditionally weak mechanisms of the Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP) but brought in jeopardy the most appreciated achievements of the European integration process, namely its common space of freedom, wealth, security and law.The war in and around Syria, the main cause of the refugee question, also asks for a coherent European position and action.

The financial crises in the Euro-zone have not yet been fully settled, and there are serious questions about the new regulatory framework's effectiveness.

Besides, it has giving ground to the growing popularity of radical politics that can debase the idea of a democratic Europe.

Finally, is serving as a catalyst for the problem of defence divergence in Europe.

Northern and Eastern European countries concentrate on Russia as the main strategic issue, while Southern European countries consider the refugee crisis as the main strategic issue. It is high time for the Europeans to read the signs at the wall: Internal cohesion and the Union's survival in a disordered world are inextricably interlinked.

Only a coherent Union can cope with the problems in its periphery and develop the resilience needed to mitigate the impact of these challenges on the Union, its nations and societies.

To this end, the proposed book aims at analysing the internal and external risks and challenges the EU is facing as well as searching for political and institutional responses and ways out of the crisis.

In their chapters the authors will analyse the factors that foster or impede cohesion amongst the Europeans and draw conclusions for the future of the EU's Common Foreign and Security Policy.
