This Karen Katz book was fabulous for introducing my baby to the wonderful world of reading. She was captivated by this book when she was about 9 months old.

Very round, very cute, very... childlike, for lack of a better word. And I always appreciate the effort in making a multiracial cast of kids, not everybody does that.Would be nice if the flaps were a little stronger, though. Unfortunately, they *will* rip off, so this book has to be supervised only :(

I truly dislike the artwork in this book. But Evie loves the book, fold out pages throughout make it fun.

The text is simple, relying on the lift-the-flap innovation to carry the story, which it does. Each spread starts with the first page asking the location of a different baby body part - hands, feet, belly button, and so on. The next page has a flap that hides the corresponding body part, and when lifted, uses a preposition to describe the discovered location. Even though the story is so simple, it has a lot of teaching points for young children, and my girls really love it. I adore seeing their faces light up whenever I pop up a flap. (I saw this a couple of years ago with my eldest, and am seeing it all over again with my infant.) The pictures are bright and colorful and feature babies, adding to the appeal for little ones. I definitely recommend this book, and others written by Karen Katz, as a steady favorite for small children.

Where's Baby's Belly Button? is an interactive board book for toddlers by Karen Katz. Each spread contains an illustration of a round, smiling baby accompanied by a question asking where a certain part of the baby's body, like the belly button or eyes, is located. However, the sought-after parts are hidden under flips and flaps, great for kids who can't sit still and need to touch everything. The illustrations of the babies are simple and in warm, soothing colors. What's really great is that these babies are of different races, so no one feels left out. Where's Baby's Belly Button? is an ideal choice for toddlers just being introduced to the world of books. Since the story is repetitive and predictable, it could be a useful learning tool for children who are just becoming familiar with words and reading. The tenth anniversary edition of this popular book was just released this year.
