Hazel Hooper lives with her mother in a secluded forest with her magical mother, Hazel is curious about the outside world and only knows a little about it, except to know that people like her mother are hunted, killed. When a demon steals her mother her life changes and she finds that she does have magic and now has a grumpy dormouse called Bramley as a familiar. It's during the English Civil War, here it's a war about witchcraft and about the control of magic. It's complicating things and there are demons involved in it all and things are never predictable. She joins with some demon hunters to rescue her mother, but how well can she keep her secrets.I didn't really feel like I got to know many of the characters, except Hazel and Bramley and I want more Bramley.
