Philip Jones left the rat race in the late '90s. He has since gained a degree in English Law with Spanish Law and has pursued some charitable endeavours.
One such venture led to him writing this unique insight into life in the Peruvian Andes.
He flew to Peru in September 2009, expecting to assist in the construction of a soup kitchen in a shanty town in Lima on the behalf of a charity.
Instead, he found himself living in a small village, building a Casa Hogar at 3700m in the Andes, in no uncertain danger.
His description of his stay in Apuquri and of the people he met there provides a unique insight into a world yet to be consumed by the 21st century.
A time and a place where the old ways are very much alive, and all is not what it appears to be.
Full of witty comments and insight, this is a charming and enjoyable memoir.
A delightful and instructive read; it is a much-needed glimpse into a living world that owes more to the legacy of the vanquished Incas than the victorious Spaniards.
