The kingdom of Goredd is populated by humans and by dragons who fold themselves into a human form.

Though they live alongside each other, the peace between them is uneasy.

But when a member of the royal family is murdered, and the crime appears to have been committed by a dragon the peace and treaty between both worlds is seriously threatened...Into this comes Seraphina, a gifted musician who joins the royal court as the assistant to the court composer.

She is soon drawn into the murder investigation and, as she uncovers hints of a sinister plot to destroy the peace in Goredd for good, finds herself caught desperately in the middle of the tension.

For Seraphina hides a secret - the secret behind her musical gift - and if she is found out, her life is in serious danger...

This is a really well-imagined world, and the author doesn't feel the irritating need to explain everything. She just gets on with it, and trusts the reader to keep up. And generally I did.Seraphina, the titular protagonist, is a very strong character who only occasionally relapses into an annoying teenager, although as she's meant to be, like, 15 or something I suppose that's forgiveable. And there are dragons! Really really good ones. And music, and psychic connections, and racism, and inter-generational conflict and culture overcoming barbarianism, and loads of good things. In fact, there's far more than can really fit into one little book, and I'd be surprised if there's not going to be a sequel coming out. I'll read it!

There are probably a whole range of thought provoking sentences I could muster up to describe my love of this book. None of which would actually do it any justice.

In the end, you'll just have to settle for this:

Just read this. Trust me.
