April Epner (Hunt) is a 39-year-old New York schoolteacher who hits a midlife crisis when, in quick succession, her husband (Matthew Broderick) leaves her, her adoptive mother (Lynn Cohen) dies and her biological mother (Bette Midler), an eccentric talk show host, materialises and proceeds to turn her life upside down.
In the midst of all this, April begins a tentative relationship with Frank (Colin Firth), the father of one of her students.
