Description

For the first time information from the Society of Painters in Watercolour's printed catalogues and handwritten sales book has been brought together in one volume, thus making it possible to establish not only when a particular painting by a specific artist was exhibited but also, in a great many cases, how much it sold for and who purchased it.

This volume lists all the paintings that were exhibited in the 50 years following the inaugural exhibition held from April to June 1805.

As well as many well-known names such as David Cox, Peter De Wint, Copley Fielding, Samuel Palmer and John Varley, the 17,000 entries include several lesser known artists.

Famous patrons include Queen Victoria, Prince Albert, Sir Robert Peel and William Beckford.

This book will add to the value of watercolours listed within it; to know that a watercolour was exhibited at the Royal Watercolour Society will give added confidence to potential buyers, especially if the price and the first owner are quoted.

This is a valuable reference for paintings by established artists as well as lesser known exhibitors, and should be highly valued by dealers, collectors, art historians and researchers.
