Description

Documentary about Victor Hugo's classic nineteenth-century story and its subsequent adaptations to stage and screen.

The novel follows the journey of French ex-convict Jean Valjean who atones for his sins by becoming an upstanding member of society.

In the 1980s it was adapted into a stage musical, produced by Cameron Mackintosh, in which Alfie Boe later played the lead role.

Tom Hooper directed the 2012 film version which stars Hugh Jackman as Valjean.

The programme features input from cast and crew of both productions, including Mackintosh, Boe, Hooper and Jackman, as well as Anne Hathaway, Amanda Seyfried and Frances Ruffelle, as they discuss how the story has continued to captivate audiences over so many years.
