The studies in this volume have as their specific focus the origins of the Feast of the Dormition of the Virgin and their aim is to help explain how there arose the very different literary and liturgical traditions of the Greeks, Georgians and Armenians. In addition, this exploration of the sources makes available to scholars a wide range of often inaccessible texts in Armenian and Georgian, as well as in the Syriac and Coptic traditions. The key to understanding the development of the tradition, the author argues, is to examine its relationship with imperial policies and in particular the attitudes of the Byzantine emperors of the 5th-7th centuries towards the pro- and anti-chalcedonian tendencies. Overall, these studies throw new light on the growth of the cult of the Virgin and the sites of this cult, in Jerusalem and Constantinople, as well as many aspects of early Byzantine politics and the history of Eastern Christianity. Les etudes regroupees dans ce volume se concentrent specifiquement sur les origines de la FAte de la Formition de la Vierge et ont pour objectif d'aider A expliquer l'avenement des tres differentes traditions litteraires et liturgiques grecques, georgiennes et armeniennes. En sus, cette exploration des sources donne acces aux specialistes A un large evential de textes souvent innaccessibles, en armenien et en georgien, ainsi que de traditions syriaque et coptique.
