Tchiloli, Masks and Myths DVD

Directed by Ines Gonnalves

DVD

Description

Documentary about the Tchiloli, the traditional musical play that has been staged on the Portuguese-speaking West African islands of Sao Tome and Principe since the first Portuguese settlers arrived in the 15th century.

Dressed in European women's clothing and distinctive masks, male actors narrate a Renaissance text brought to life by an extravanganza of music and dance.

The event represents a unique fusion of African and European cultural heritage that has been passed down from generation to generation for over 500 years.
