A little bit about us
Buy second-hand books, out-of-print, used, online. Ystwyth Books is one of Wales’ best known shops for new and second-hand books. It was established in Aberystwyth in 1977 by Terry and Halcyon Hinde. The second-hand books (also out-of-print and new) cover a very wide range of subjects with a special emphasis on Welsh literature, language and history, poetry in many languages, wildlife/conservation and art/architecture. The current owner, Martin Ashby has expanded the stock and re-arranged some areas. The building was once two houses then an antiques shop, then a wholefood cooperative and can be said to have ‘character’, in other words is showing its age in a (usually) appealing way. It has recently been described as Georgian with Victorian characteristics and is an Conservation area. This area contains an art/framing shop, one of the most well-known cafes in town - ‘The Blue Creek‘, the indoor market, many former homes of literary figures from Wales, the Joseph Parry Hall, a great facility for rehearsing and performing music, a castle and of course the sea. Truly the Latin Quarter of Aberystwyth ! The shop also undertakes used book ordering for libraries, schools or individuals. Some new titles are available next day -some take longer ! A discount of 10% is available for students. Second-hand books are bought from private customers, estates, and libraries. The owner can visit throughout Wales with enough notice.
