George R R Martin

George R. R. Martin is the author of fourteen novels, including five volumes of A Song of Ice and Fire, several collections of short stories and numerous screen plays for television dramas and feature films.

He was born in September 20, 1948 in Bayonne, New Jersey. He began writing very young, selling monster stories to other neighbourhood children. He later became a comic book fan in high school and began to write fiction for comic fanzines – his first professional sale was made in 1970 at age 21: “The Hero”, sold to Galaxy and published in the February 1971 issue.

He received a B.S. in Journalism from Northwestern University in 1970 and wrote part-time throughout that decade while working as a VISTA Volunteer, chess director, and teacher. In 1979, after divorcing Gale Burnick, he became a full-time writer.

He signed on as a story editor for Twilight Zone at CBS Television in 1986, and after working as an Executive Story Consultant and Producer for Beauty and the Beast, he moved up to Executive Producer for Doorways, a pilot he wrote for Columbia Pictures Television, filmed during 1992-1993.

He currently lives in Santa Fe, New Mexico.
