Derek Landy

Irish born Derek Landy (October 23rd 1974) lives near Dublin with a variety of cats, a German shepherd and two geriatric Staffordshire bull terriers with an attitude. Growing up in Lusk he attended Drogheda Grammar School, briefly studied animation at Ballyfermot College, earned his black belt in Kenpo karate and, to top it off, worked on his parents’ vegetable farm for over a decade.

Before embarking on the thrilling tales of a sharply dressed skeleton detective, he wrote the screenplays for a Zombie movie and a slasher thriller in which everybody dies. ‘I think my career-guidance teacher is spinning in her grave’ he says, ‘or she would be if she were dead.’  Both movies made it to film with the latter being nominated for an IFTA (Irish Film and Television Academy) award. Landy himself was nominated for Best Script at the same awards.

Growing frustrated with the collaborative process of filmmaking, Landy moved to children’s writing. Far too modest to talk about any awards or accolades his books may have won, Landy, for instance, won’t mention the fact that his first book, Skulduggery Pleasant, won the Red House Children’s Book Award, or that his second, Playing With Fire, won an Irish Book Award for Children’s Book of the year, or that his third, The Faceless Ones, is his mother’s personal favourite.

The original Skulduggery Pleasant series launched in 2007 and was an immediate bestseller, ending in 2014 with the publication of the 9th book. In June 2017, Derek returned to the world he had made and its unforgettable characters with Skulduggery Pleasant: Resurrection, which has sold over 27,000 copies through TCM in hardback so far.
