Seventeen-year-old Phil has felt like an outsider as long as he can remember.
All Phil has ever known about his father is that he was Number Three on his mother's list - third in a series of affairs that have set Phil's family even further apart from the critical townspeople across the river.
As for his own sexuality, Phil doesn't care what the neighbours will think; he's just waiting for the right bloke to come along.
Haunting, provocative, and sophisticated, this literary novel by award winner by Andreas Steinhofel has become a much acclaimed international success.

Review by Bembo
All seventeen year old Phil wants is a to be able to find the right guy, someone to love and who will love him in return; that and to discover who is father is. He's an outsider, as his family: his twin sister who seems able to communicate with animals, and his single mother who gave birth to the twins when she was just seventeen as she arrived in Europe after running away from the US. Being an outsider Phil is at ease with his inclinations, as are his family and their close knit friends. This is a mesmerising and evocative story, beautifully and unhurriedly narrated by the delightful young Phil, who keeps us abreast of the present while frequently digressing to fill us in on past events in his life. A most enjoyable and positive book.

Utterly absorbed into his world whilst I was reading this and was cross every time I had to come back into reality! Definitely recommended.
