Ordell Robbie and Louis Gara have lots in common - time in the same gaol, convictions for auto theft, and a grand plan.
They're going to snatch the wife of a Detroit developer and collect some easy ransom money.
At least that's what they think...What they haven't figured on is the fact that the husband has a secret mistress and has absolutely no desire to get his wife back.
So now it's time for Plan B. With the help of one seriously ticked-off housewife they are going to take the scumbag for everything he's got...THE SWITCH has been adapted for the big screen as LIFE OF CRIME, starring Jennifer Aniston, Tim Robbins and Isla Fisher.

Review by blackhornet
Great coincidence - this, the second Elmore Leonard I've read, features the key characters from the first, 'Rum Punch', set some 15 years later and filmed as Jackie Brown. This book is about the botched kidnapping mentioned in 'Rum Punch'. It's great to see how the characters started out: it makes the lives Louis and Melanie come to lead all the more tragic and reveals the deterioration of Ordell's already unsavoury character. While Leonard is well known as a crime writer, he doesn't seem to shift that many copies. It's hard to figure out why, given how compelling are his plots and how clear his writing. However, as I mentioned in my review of Rum Punch, his work is less generic than that of others working in crime. Perhaps it is the originality of his twists and his willingness to explore themes not usually associated with crime ('The Switch' can easily be read as a novel of female awakening and empowerment)that leaves his sales short of many of his less talented contemporaries.
