After a series of brutal murders, Batman begins to unravel this deadly mystery, and discovers a conspiracy going back to his youth, The Court of Owls - once thought to be nothing more than an urban legend. The storyline really kept me interested and wanting to find out what was going to happen next. The artwork is great, and as Batman seems to be going more mad, the art follows that same style.

I've watched many Batman cartoons, but never actually read any of the comics that inspired them. As I am indulging in some of DK's New 52 graphic novels, Batman was an obvious choice. And it was awesome. The comic exudes everything that made me like the cartoons: dark noir atmosphere, mystery, creepy villains, and Bruce Wayne. I love Bruce Wayne. He is the first antihero, with his tragic back story and brooding ways, yet noble and good, all in a nice-looking package. We also get to see multiple Robins in this first collection, the ever great Alfred, and Commissioner Gordon. The story is about the Court of Owls, a fabled group of powerful rulers that keep Gotham in their talons, even when they seem to be lost in the shadows. Bruce does not believe in them, despite mounting evidence of their carnage. For instance, their threat to kill Bruce Wayne. When he is nearly destroyed after being pushed out the window of one of his own towers, he decides that someone is using the Court of Owls legend as a cover for their crimes, and tracks them down using clues from the creepy nursery rhyme. Unfortunately, his lack of belief may be misguided. The mystery is great, and I like the new villains who are ... quite disturbing. I am getting the next in the series as soon as it is available in paperback.
