To call this a novel is a stretch. It is a 19th-century whaling textbook, with a story about a guy who wants to catch one particular whale thrown in (and maybe 20% of the thing actually concerns Ahab and the White Whale). Parts of it are very well-written and there is even some humour thrown in once in a while, but overall it is incredibly long and dull. Much like Peter Jackson's adaptation of King Kong, it would probably be fantastic at half the length.
