The Hobbit : or, There and Back Again Hardback
Illustrated by Alan Lee
Sumptuous, oversized hardback edition of the classic adventure, fully illustrated with over 60 watercolour and pencil illustrations by award-winning artist, Alan Lee, Conceptual Designer on Peter Jackson's THE HOBBIT: AN UNEXPECTED JOURNEY.
J.R.R. Tolkien's great classic work, The Hobbit, celebrated its 60th year of publication (1937) with a gorgeous illustrated edition by artist Alan Lee, winner of the Kate Greenaway medal for illustration, and creator of the fabulously successful Centenary edition of The Lord of the Rings.
Containing 22 full colour illustrations depicting key scenes from this all-time classic (scenes such as Gollum and Bilbo, The Wargs, Smaug the Dragon and The Battle of the Five Armies), this beautifully designed volume also includes a wealth of integrated pencil drawings which demonstrate perfectly Alan's genius at work.
Alan Lee's work on this book, as well as the illustrated Lord of the Rings, led to him being approached by Peter Jackson to join the film trilogy as Conceptual Artist. The same artistic vision, present in his beautiful paintings and drawings, played a major role in the look of the films, and his work received the ultimate accolade with an Academy Award for Best Art Direction on The Return of the King.

I read this book first as an adult, after I read Lord of the Rings. I am a big fan of LotR and therefore liked to read more about the beautifully thought out world of Middle-Earth. But I also think that the Hobbit in itself is worth the read, also for adults. It is a gripping story about this young Hobbit, who likes his comfort, but is dragged into an amazing adventure, which teaches him about the world beyond his Hobbit-hole.

The best of Tolkien's books by a long shot. It is the one with the most action and the least chapters devoted to setting up the story. I love this book, the story, the fantasy elements, the characters. Long live Middle Earth!

I loved The Hobbit! It is a great introduction to the Lord of the Rings series and is a fun adventure! I loved it and strongly recommend it.

Beautiful writing. Granted, in places it was a bit too hard with too many unknown words for my kids, but they enjoyed the story about a little hobbit who leaves his treehouse for the first time to see the world. Recommended to the young and old.

The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien is the story of Bilbo Baggins. A Hobbit who gets recruited to help dwarves recover treasure that was lost to them long ago. It is a great story that involves elves, goblins, and other creatures. It is a very good classic book.
