What a strange little book, even for Michael Innes. This is the audiobook version read masterfully by Matt Addis who delivers a marvelously creepy villain. This book has so many torturous turns you have to occasionally backtrack to make sure you are with the plot. Counting horses, spiritualism, human trafficking, the portents of WWII, cannibals and London houses somehow come together in the South American utopia of a maniac. The narration is really fabulous. I'm not sure I would have lasted through a simple read.

This book is a lot of fun but frankly bizarre. The Appleby books are mostly straight police procedurals, but in this one Appleby is whisked off to South America by an evil mastermind with the help of a psychic horse named Daffodil. I don't even know. But I enjoyed the book.
